A journalist, columnist and documentary filmmaker, Can Dündar has written for several Turkish newspapers, including Hürriyet, Sabah and Milliyet, produced TV programs for various channels, and published over 20 books. Editor-in-chief of the centre-left newspaper Cumhuriyet until August 2016, he and Ankara bureau chief Erdem Gül were arrested on charges of espionage and being members of a terrorist organisation in November 2015, but released from prison in February 2016 on order of the Supreme Court. On May 6, 2016, Dündar survived an assassination attempt in front of the Istanbul courthouse where he had been defending himself against charges of treason. The same day, he was sentenced to five years and 10 months imprisonment for “leaking secret information of the state.” Forced to leave Turkey, he has lived in exile in Berlin, Germany since June 2016. He is currently editor-in-chief of online news platform #ÖZGÜRÜZ ("We are free"), which publishes independent and uncensored news about Turkey for an international audience.
